What is JC2 Chemistry?
Junior colleges are pre-university institutions in Singapore that offer a two-year course.
Junior colleges accept students based on their “L1R5” aggregate grading from their Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examination.
The term “L1R5” refers to the aggregate scores from the students’ subject grades. This includes the first language and five other content subjects in the exam.
First-year junior college students who are getting familiar with A-Level Chemistry have to be aware of two levels: Higher (H1) and Higher 2 (H2). Read this blog article to find out the subject combination as well as what does H1, H2 and H3 actually mean for the JC students.
Chemistry is an important and central part of science, which bridges Physics, Biology and Geology.
It is a prerequisite to some of the most sought-after university courses such as Medicine, Dentistry and Environmental engineering.
JC students are expected to study wide-ranging chapters for the A-Level Chemistry. You can visit the blog article (mentioned above) to take an in-depth look into the topics that are tested in the JC H2 chemistry.
During the pre-exam revision phase, Tutopiya helps all students practice on exam-based questions. Our JC2 Chemistry online tuition program at Tutopiya aims to assist junior college students to excel in the A-Level Chemistry examination.
This is achieved through a structured program developed by our team of experienced JC Chemistry tutors, including ex-MOE teachers to help students understand the essential areas of the JC chemistry.
More importantly, our method provides the opportunity for students to apply the chemical principles and theories they have learnt overall.
How will students be tested?
The H2 Chemistry A-Level syllabus has shifted its emphasis from factual material to understanding and application of scientific concepts and principles.
Some questions may be based on information which is unfamiliar to the student.
Therefore, Tutopiya aims to demonstrate how to use principles and concepts that are within the syllabus so students can apply them logically during the exam.
Students should be familiar with the exam format, so they know what to expect and the key areas to focus on during revision.
The main differences between H1 and H2 Chemistry are the scope of topics covered and the scheme of assessment.
H2 Chemistry (9729) exam format includes the following :
Paper 1
Multiple choice questions which consist of 30 questions where students are expected to complete in 50 minutes.
The maximum marks that can be obtained are 30 marks and the weightage is 15% of the overall score.
Paper 2
Structures and free-response questions where students are expected to complete in 2 hours.
The maximum marks that can be obtained are 75 marks and this constitutes 30% of the overall score.
Paper 3
Consists of free response questions divided into two sections: section A and section B.
Section A is made up of 3-4 free-response questions which total up to 60 marks.
All questions in this section are compulsory.
Section B consists of 2 questions which each student has to choose 1 to complete the paper.
The maximum marks obtainable in section A is 20 marks. The weightage of paper 3 is 35% of the overall score.
Paper 4
This is known as a practical assessment, which assesses the skills of students in terms of planning, measurement and observation.
Students are given 2 hours 30 minutes to complete the assessment, which occupies 20% of the overall grade.
