How does the SAT measure Academic Achievement?

All of the learning you’ve done — from childhood to now — contributes to how you think, how your mind manages information. Even if you don’t recall the details of a history or science lesson, the process of learning information and blending it with previously learned information is key to becoming a skilled thinker.

The world needs more people who can use their thinking skills to solve problems, communicate clearly, and understand complex relationships.

The best high school courses promote thinking skills, and colleges are looking for students who are skilled thinkers. The SAT is designed to measure the thinking skills you’ll need to succeed in college and your career.

Structure of the SAT

Order Section Time in Minutes # of Questions Time per question
1 Reading 65 52 75 seconds
2 Writing and Language 35 44 48 seconds
3 Math (No Calculator) 25 20 75 seconds
4 Math (Calculator) 55 38 77 seconds
5 Essay (optional) 50 1
Total: 3 hours, 50 minutes (3 hours without essay) 154 (+1 essay prompt)

Reading Test

65 MINUTES, 52 QUESTIONS

SAT Reading the longest section of the new SAT, clocking in at 65 minutes. All Reading questions are passage-based.

You’ll answer 10 to 12 questions on each of five passages, for a total of 52 questions. As you saw in the chart above, that leaves you with about 1 minute and 15 seconds per question. All of the questions are multiple-choice and feature four answer choices: A, B, C, and D.

Writing and Language Test

35 MINUTES, 44 QUESTIONS

The SAT Writing and Language section is about half as long as Reading at 35 minutes.

It’s technically called Writing and Language, but you’ll probably hear it shortened to Writing. All of its questions are also passage-based.

Math Test – No Calculator

25 MINUTES, 20 QUESTIONS

Math section during which you are not allowed to use a calculator. This 25-minute section consists of 20 questions, and students are not allowed to use a calculator.

Math Test – Calculator

55 MINUTES, 38 QUESTIONS

You can use a calculator throughout this 55-minute section, though you don’t necessarily need to. College Board says it wants to test your calculator fluency, or your ability to determine when a calculator’s a useful tool and when it would just slow you down.

The Math with Calculator is the longer of the two math sections and asks 38 questions. This leaves you with about 1 minute and 17 seconds per question.

How is the SAT scored?

When you take the SAT, you don’t get just one score. The SAT reports a total score, but there are also section scores, test scores and subscores.

You earn points on the SAT by answering questions correctly. No points are deducted for wrong answers, so give your best answer to every question — there’s no advantage to leaving any blank.

The total score is the number most commonly associated with the SAT. The total score ranges from 400 to 1600. This score is the sum of the scores on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section (which includes the Reading and Writing and Language Tests) and the Math section.

Test Scores

Test scores are reported on a scale of 10 to 40 for each of the three required tests: Reading, Writing and Language, and Math.

Good Test-Taking Strategies

1 – Keeping track of time

Pace yourself by keeping track of the time using either a clock or a watch that’s on your desk. Each section of the test has its own time limit. Check yourself one-quarter, one-half, and three-quarters of the way through the allotted time to make sure you’re still on pace.

While you need to keep your answer sheet free of stray marks, you’re welcome to mark up the test booklet as much as you want.

2 – Annotating your test booklet

Annotating your test booklet can, if done judiciously, help you recall important facts or work through challenging problems.

Consider skimming the questions in the Reading and the Writing and Language Tests prior to reading each of the passages in order to get a sense of what issues will be important.

Before reading the answer choices for each multiple-choice question, try to come up with the right answer on your own. Then read the possible answers to find the one closest to your own.

3 – Making educated guess

Remember that there’s no penalty for guessing, so you should answer all questions before time is up. When you’re not sure of an answer, make an educated guess. For multiple-choice questions, draw lines through each of the answer choices you eliminate.

Eliminating even one answer choice substantially increases your odds of choosing correctly.

Important: Be sure to check often to make sure that the number of the question you’re about to answer matches the number in the test booklet. Erase and adjust if needed.

You may finish some sections before time runs out. Review, but do so carefully. You don’t want to second-guess yourself and change answers just to change them.

4 – Reading all answer choices thoroughly

Always read all the answer choices. You don’t want a hasty decision to cause you to select the wrong answer to a question.

5 – Move on when stuck

Don’t dwell on questions that stump you. Circle ones you decide to skip so that you can return to them quickly later. Remember that a question you answer easily and quickly is worth as much as a question that you struggle with or take a lot of time on.
